Allergies and Sinus
Comprehensive Sinus Treatment
At Dubuque ENT, our doctors offer comprehensive sinus care. Oftentimes, sinus disease needs treated from "multiple angles", with allergy treatment, medical management, and sometimes treatment of structural blockages. Our doctors are skilled at treating "the whole patient", and not just the symptoms.
At your evaluation, your doctor will listen to your symptoms and concerns, and examine your head and neck. A nasal endoscopy may be performed to identify infection, blockages, or polyps. A CT scan may be ordered to identify disease within the lining of the sinuses. Finally, allergy testing may be ordered to help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
Chronic sinusitis affects an estimated 11 million americans. We now offer minimally invasive sinus and nasal treatments such as Balloon Sinuplasty™, PolypVac™, Latera Implant ™, and Inferior turbinate coblation. These simple office procedures help you to breathe freely again, and eliminate your chronic facial pressure and drainage. Our surgeons are also skilled at endoscopic sinus surgery, and use state-of-the-art techniques such as the Propel implant to maximize your healing.

Is Balloon Sinuplasty right for me?
Balloon sinuplasty is becoming more popular with patients than traditional sinus surgery because it is minimally invasive, and patients do not have a prolonged recovery from the procedure. There is no cutting, and patients typically return to work within one to two days. The chances for scarring are very low. It is performed in the office under local anesthesia, and patients return home the same day without nasal packing. Sometimes, it is still necessary to perform traditional endoscopic sinus surgery, but at Dubuque ENT patients are involved in the decision making process with their surgeon. Your surgeon will advise you on the recommended treatment that best meets your goals.
Nasal polyp removal
Unlike other types of sinusitis, patients with nasal polyps often do not suffer from bad pressure, headaches, or infections. Formerly, treatment of nasal polyps required that patients be taken to the operating room for extensive surgeries. While this is sometimes still necessary, many patients are now able to avoid extensive surgery and instead have their polyps removed in the office with just local anesthesia. This is virtually painless, with minimal bleeding, and minimal downtime. Patients are amazed at how this simple procedure restores their breathing.

Inferior turbinate coblation
When you visit with the doctors at Dubuque ENT for nasal congestion, they can help determine what is causing your problem. In many cases, the inferior turbinates are responsible for nasal blockage. They can be treated with a straightforward procedure called “coblation” in the office under local anesthesia.
What are “turbinates”
The turbinates are shelf-like structures on the inside of the nose. Their job is to warm and humidify the air that we breathe. When a patient has nasal blockage that shifts from side to side, this is the likely cause. Sometimes, the turbinates get overgrown and cause nasal congestion, and may be treated with this procedure
What is “Coblation”
Coblation is the name of a technology that uses a plasma wand to remove tissue. The handpiece is shaped like a needle, and the tip is inserted into the inferior turbinate, and used to create multiple channels within the turbinate. Energy is activated over about 10 seconds, and this creates an area of helpful scarring within the turbinate. This is repeated several areas within the turbinate to reduce the size.
The Latera implant is a revolutionary approach to correcting certain causes of nasal obstruction. The "Nasal Valve" is the region on the side of the nose that collapses inward when you sniff forcefully. Patients who benefit from Breathe Right Nasal Strips™ are likely to have a weakness in this area of the nasal skeleton, causing the sensation of blockage or difficulty breathing through the nose. Formerly, and open rhinoplasty was required to correct this problem. While effective, this procedure has a prolonged period of swelling on the outside of the nose.
The Latera Implant™ can be placed in the office under local anesthesia, or in the operating room. It acts to support the side of the nose and prevents collapse. It is made from a similar material to dissolvable suture, and gradually is replaced by helpful scar tissue over about 18 months, but the results can be permanant.
Endoscopic sinus surgery
Sometimes it is necessary to perform endoscopic sinus surgery in the operating room. This is performed under general anesthesia, with the patient fully asleep. Our surgeons are highly trained and highly skilled in performing this surgery safely and effectively. We utilize high definition optics to maximize visualization. We use Brainlab image guidance which is like a GPS for the sinuses, to help us remove the disease completely. Our surgeons use the latest technology such as Propel drug eluting implants to help maximize your healing and minimize use of prednisone which has multiple harmful side effects.

What is Subcutaneous Immunotherapy?
Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (allergy shots) are performed on a weekly basis in our clinic. The injection is made from purified allergens, and formulated by our team to match your allergy profile. Immunotherapy helps to decrease the part of the immune system that causes allergies, while boosting the part of the immune system that helps to fight infections.
After your injection, our allergy nurse will observe you for any reactions over the next 30 minutes. A typical course of treatment is 3 years, however many patients choose to continue shots long term.
What is Sublingual Immunotherapy?
Sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) is performed at home by the patient. A vial of purified allergen extract is prepared by our team to match your allergy profile. There is no more convenient of a way to improve your allergy symptoms. Allergy drops are very effective, and have been used safely in Europe for over 30 years.
